Find answers to your Bernedoodle questions.

Many people want to own a Doodle, but they may not know all the variations in the dogs’ energy levels, temperament, and size. We’ve answered several FAQs you might have about Bernedoodle puppies.

If an owner doesn’t address their environment, activity, and expectations, they (and the puppy) can end up unhappy.

Each Bernedoodle has a unique personality and energy level. But when you choose the right puppy, you’ll bring home a gentle companion that can easily adapt to a new environment and become part of the family.

It’s important to learn as much as you can about a puppy before bringing them home. To guide you in your research, we’ve answered a few FAQs about Bernedoodles. If you have further questions, feel free to call us at 765-404-8312 or email us here.

1What is a Bernedoodle?

A Bernedoodle is a cross between a Poodle and a Bernese Mountain Dog. We cross Bernese females with Poodle males for healthy (and adorable) Bernedoodles. Our puppies will be mainly traditional tri-colored: black, brown, and white and triple-colored merle.

Bernedoodles combine a Poodle’s intelligence with a Bernese Mountain Dog’s loyalty. They’re also low- to non-shedding, so these puppies are great for anyone with mild allergies.

2What’s their personality like?

You get the best of both worlds when you choose a Bernedoodle. They have a Poodle’s intelligence and playfulness mixed with a Bernese Mountain Dog’s loyalty and gentleness. Bernedoodles are perfect for families with small children, elderly loved ones, and even other pets. In our opinion, Bernedoodles are practically perfect! Not just because we raise them but because they are so human-like and easy to train!

3Why should I get a Bernedoodle?

Our puppies are active, smart, and great with kids and other pets. They’re also friendly companions for elderly owners. Bernedoodles are healthy dogs, even more so than their purebred parents. Crossing the Bernese and the Poodle allows the Bernedoodle to keep the Bernese qualities that so many people adore, while also having a much longer lifespan (12-17 years). They truly highlight the best of both breeds for you to enjoy!

We also know how special it is to have a loyal companion as your pet. When you bring home a Bernedoodle puppy, you’ll add a gentle, friendly new member to your family!

4How big will my puppy grow to be?

Our mini-small standard Bernedoodles will weigh 20-70 pounds and stand 14-26 inches tall when fully grown. This is a large size range. We have a very good idea of the expected mature size of your puppy by the time you choose him/her.

1How long do Bernedoodles live?

Mini Bernedoodles live between 12 and 17 years. Medium-small standard Bernedoodles are expected to live 12-15 years.

2I’ve heard Bernese Mountain Dogs can be stubborn. Is this also true for Bernedoodles?

It can be. For example, Bernese might lie on their backs when given a command, and your Bernedoodle may or may not do the same. But Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles are both intelligent, so most Bernedoodles respond well to training.

3Do Bernedoodles shed? If so, how much?

Bernedoodles have three types of coats: curly, wavy, and straight. The curlier the puppy’s hair, the less it will shed. A curlier coat requires more grooming to prevent matting, but curly-haired pups are more hypoallergenic. Bernedoodles with wavy or straight coats will shed more and are worse for allergies, but you won’t have as much matting. F1B puppies are 1/4 Bernese 3/4 Poodle so shed minimally or not at all. F1 puppies are 1/2 Bernese and 1/2 Poodle so will shed some but not much. You will likely see hair in a brush but minimal hair on clothes and furniture.

4How often will I have to groom my puppy?

You should brush your puppy every other day to prevent matting; brushing them daily is even better. If you brush your pup often, one haircut every 8-12 weeks or so should be sufficient, depending on your preferences and your dog’s activities.

1Do you have a health/genetics guarantee?

Yes. The health of our Bernedoodles is our top priority, so your puppy will be in tip top shape when you get him/her. He/she will be up-to-date on their shots and cleared by out reproductive vet. Our vet, who’s also a dog breeder, will make sure your Bernedoodle has the necessary vaccinations and thorough examination before clearing your puppy for your home.

We also test our dogs' genetics through the OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals). And we work with a canine reproductive specialist to ensure proper breeding for our mamas. Your mini Bernedoodle puppy will be guaranteed for the first year against genetic issues.

2How much does a Bernedoodle puppy cost?

We charge $4,000-$5500 per puppy, unless you choose to reserve the pick of the litter. A few reasons for this price are:

  • Generation type: Our puppies are F1 (first generation) and F1b (second generation)Bernedoodles, which means one parent is a Poodle and the other is a Bernese Mountain Dog or a Bernedoodle. Bernese are known to be difficult to get pregnant and take much time with their litters.
  • Color coat and size: Traditional tri-colored and tri-colored merle Bernedoodles (our puppies) are typically the most sought-after — and the most expensive. Few mini poodles carry the genetics to produce the gorgeous tri-colored pups that we raise. Even fewer carry the bright blue eye gene that Hank carries. This is why we do not offer his stud services any longer.
  • Health and maintenance: We invest an immense amount of time and money into making sure our puppies and their parents are free of diseases and genetic disorders. Bernese Mountain Dogs also don’t have a high pregnancy success rate, and they are prone to a few health issues. So, we have to take extra precautions with our mama dogs for their impeccable health and the puppies’.
  • We are hands on with our puppies from day 1! We use the world renown "Puppy Culture Professional Curriculum" while raising our puppies for the first 8 weeks. This is very time consuming and effective!
